Preschool Learning That Lasts: Read, Count, Create!

At HIPPY Halton, we believe that preschool learning happens best through play, connection, and creativity.

This June, we are focusing on simple activities that help your child build early skills in reading, writing, and math. Each week, we will share a theme, a fun read-aloud story, and a few easy ways to keep learning going at home.

Week 1: Fun with Letters and Sounds 

Learning letters and the sounds they make is the first step to reading. This week, try activities that help your child connect sounds to letters in a fun and active way.

Try This

• Match uppercase and lowercase letters using cards or paper cutouts -> Try this letter matching activity

• Trace your child’s name in rainbow colours ->  Print a rainbow name tracing sheet

• Go on a sound scavenger hunt by finding items that start with each letter

Story of the Week

 Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr.

 This colourful story is a lively introduction to the alphabet. Children will love the rhythm and silliness as letters climb up the coconut tree.

Week 2: Numbers in Nature 

Math is everywhere, even outdoors. This week, we are using nature to explore numbers, counting, and patterns.

Try This

• Take a walk and count leaves, sticks, or birds -> Nature walk and count activity

• Paint rocks with numbers and use them to practice counting -> Painted rock numbers activity 

• Draw a chalk hopscotch path and jump through the numbers together

Story of the Week 

Ten Black Dots by Donald Crews 

This visual story shows how dots can turn into fun things like balloons, buttons, or wheels. It is a great way to practice counting and spotting numbers in everyday life.

Week 3: Storytelling Through Art

Children have big imaginations. This week we are helping them use art to tell stories and build language skills.

Try This

• Help your child make their own picture book -> Make your own storybook

• Create paper bag puppets and act out a story together ->Try this paper bag puppet craft

• Use old magazines to cut and glue pictures into a story collage ->Create a collage story with magazine pictures

Week 4: Building Math Confidence Through Play

This week we are using everyday objects and playful songs to build early math skills. Counting, sorting, and recognizing shapes are all part of the fun.

Try This

• Go on a shape hunt around the house ->Printable shape hunt activity

• Sort snacks or toys by colour, shape, or size
