A Newcomer Mother's Journey to Success through the HIPPY Program
G and her daughter joined the HIPPY Program less than a year after arriving in Canada from Turkey. Although G had been confident in English, both she and her daughter needed opportunities to practice the language in everyday contexts. This support was essential not only for adapting more quickly to their new environment, but also for helping her daughter, Y, build the confidence and skills needed for a successful start at Canadian school.

As a single mother, G demonstrated remarkable dedication to the program. She actively engaged in the HIPPY activities with Y, consistently practiced the weekly materials, and made a strong commitment to her daughter’s early learning. At the same time, she was focused on improving her own circumstances, diligently seeking employment to provide a better future for her family.

Their progress has been truly inspiring. After just five months in the program, Y made significant strides in her language development and received a letter of recognition from her schoolteacher, praising her impressive progress. G’s efforts also paid off – thanks to her hard work, she secured employment in her field marking a major milestone in her settlement journey.

This success story highlights the transformative impact of the HIPPY Program in supporting newcomer families as they build a strong foundation in Canada.

A Newcomer Mother Empowered by the HIPPY Program
A. is a Spanish-speaking mother of four children, all of elementary school age. Recently, her two youngest children, aged 4 and 6, enrolled in the HIPPY program to support their early development in English language skills and other foundational areas necessary for school readiness.

Both children have embraced the program enthusiastically, enjoying the play-based learning activities designed to foster cognitive and language development. A. herself has become actively involved, dedicating time and effort to the program’s activities. In doing so, she is not only supporting her children's education but also improving her own English skills and gaining new knowledge and confidence as a parent and learner.

Beyond academic growth, the HIPPY program has provided A. with valuable additional support. She has received resources and guidance on navigating life in Canada, including understanding the healthcare system, writing a resume, and learning about the nuances of the job application process.

Monthly HIPPY parent meetings have been especially beneficial, offering A. opportunities to build her social network, connect with other parents, and practice her English in a supportive environment. These interactions have helped her feel more integrated and connected within her community.

While A. acknowledges that her journey toward full integration is still ongoing, she expresses a growing sense of confidence and empowerment thanks to the comprehensive support she receives through the HIPPY Halton Program.
