Early Reading, Kindness and Connection, Home Languages, and Math Skills

At HIPPY Halton, we believe that children learn best through play, family connection, and simple routines. Each month, we share activities that help preschoolers build important school readiness skills in language, math, science, and social development. These activities are easy to do at home and use simple, everyday materials.

This February, we will focus on building early reading skills, celebrating kindness and Valentine’s Day, honouring home languages for International Mother Language Day, and strengthening early math skills. Each week supports kindergarten readiness while empowering parents as their child’s first teacher.

Week 1: Building Early Reading Skills

This week helps children develop listening skills, vocabulary, and understanding that books and print carry meaning. These early literacy skills are essential for kindergarten success.

Activities to Try

Language and Reading: Read The Day You Begin. Talk about the pictures, ask questions about the story, and encourage your child to share ideas using their own words.

Math: Try Story Sequence Cards. Draw simple pictures showing the beginning, middle, and end of a story. Have your child put them in order.

Science: Explore How Books Are Made. Look at pages, covers, and bindings. Talk about how books are created and cared for.

Social and Emotional:

Create a Reading Routine. Choose a quiet time each day to read together. This builds focus, comfort, and a love of books.

Week 2: Valentine’s Day and Kindness

This week supports social communication, empathy, and kindness while also building early math and language skills through themed play.

Activities to Try

Language and Reading: Read a Valentine or kindness themed story together. Talk about what it means to be kind and how small actions can make others feel good.

Math: Try Heart Sorting. Cut out hearts in different colours and sizes. Sort them by colour or size and count how many are in each group.

Science: Create a Friendship Plant. Plant seeds together and talk about how kindness and care help friendships grow, just like plants need water and light.

Social and Emotional: Make a Kindness Chain. Children draw or share kind actions, then link paper strips together to show how kindness connects people.

Week 3: Celebrating Home Languages

International Mother Language Day, February 21

This week celebrates the languages spoken at home and helps children understand that speaking more than one language is a strength. Strong home language skills support learning English and success in school.

A Note for Families

HIPPY Halton proudly serves families from 25 countries around the world. We celebrate the many languages spoken in our community and recognize that a strong home language supports children as they prepare for kindergarten and beyond.

To support families, HIPPY Halton brochures are available in 12 languages. Families are encouraged to explore resources in the language they feel most comfortable using at home.

Activities to Try

Language and Reading: Read a favourite story in your home language or bilingual format. Encourage your child to talk about the story using the language they feel most comfortable with.

Math: Count in Your Home Language. Count toys, steps, or snacks together using your home language and English if you choose.

Science: Sound Exploration. Listen to different sounds at home and name them in your home language. Talk about how sounds help us understand the world.

Social and Emotional: Share Family Words. Teach your child special words used in your family. This builds pride, identity, and confidence.

Week 4: Building Early Math Skills 🔢

This week helps children develop counting, sorting, number recognition, and problem solving skills that are important for kindergarten math learning.

Activities to Try

Language and Reading: Read Planting a Rainbow. Talk about colours, numbers, and patterns in the pictures.

Math: Try Seed Counting. Place seeds into small containers labeled 1 to 5. Count aloud together as your child adds seeds.

Science: Grow a Bean. Place a bean in a clear cup with a damp paper towel. Watch it grow and count days or changes together.

Social and Emotional: Math Talk Time. Encourage your child to explain how they counted or sorted items. Talking about thinking builds confidence and understanding.
